Q: How do I know if I should put my child in dance classes?

A: Dance is a wonderful activity for kids, capable of nurturing a positive self-image in both girls and boys. Dance lessons teach a child self-confidence, discipline, poise and grace. A child introduced to dance at an early age will quite likely develop a love of the arts and a passion for rhythm and movement. Most importantly, dancing is fun!

Q: How do I choose the right class for my child?

A: Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Lyrical and Acrobatic Gymnastics, there are many options for classes at DSDS. We recommend reading through our class descriptions under ” Programs’ to see what seems like the best fit for your child.  If you have any questions it’s best to call the studio. Our office staff will gladly help you in choosing the right classes for your dancer.

Q: How long do the programs run for?

A: Classes run mid-September until early June for our regular season. We also offer summer programs & camps in July & August.

Q: Do we pay at the beginning of the year for the entire year?

A: No.  At DSDS we have 3 terms for our payment schedule, you may pay for the 1st term in July, August or September and then give post-dated cheques for the 2nd and 3rd term or you may come into the office on or before December 1st and March 1st for debit/credit payment.  Our terms are as follows: 1st Term, September-December, 2nd Term -December-March, 3rd - Term March-June.  Our classes are continuous and we do not break between terms.

Q: How do I register

A:  You many register your information online on the ‘Registration’ page of the website anytime, please indicate under comments which forms of dance you are interested in receiving information on.  Payment can then be made in the office by debit, credit, cash or cheque.  Or for convenience you may send an e-transfer or credit card over the phone to finalize your registration.

Q: What if my child doesn’t like the class. Do you offer refunds?

A: Yes for children under 5 year of age, you can receive a refund during the first 4 weeks of classes. After such time no refunds will be given. We will also work with you to find a better-suited class for your child should they wish to switch to something else.

Q: Can I watch my child’s class?

A: Yes.  We do have viewing windows in the hallways.  The window glass is tinted so the parents can see in but the students cannot see out.

Q: Does my child have to perform in the year-end recital?

A: No. Participation in our year-end recital is not mandatory, however it is encouraged. We do ask that you inform the front desk if your child will not be participating in the show before the end of November. We do encourage all students, even the youngest pre-dance members, to take part in the fun and rewarding experience of performing on stage in costume.

Q: What’s involved with Recital?

A: We have 2 show nights a Friday and Saturday evening show starting at 6:15pm.  During the Recital week there will be a stage rehearsal and Dress Stage Rehearsal.   All students perform in both show nights and both stage rehearsals.   More details about or annual recital is provided in the fall.  Recital tickets will be available in May and cost approximately $25.00 per person.  Please ask in the office if you have any questions.

Q: How do I know if my child is ready for part time or competitive level programs?

A: First and foremost your child must love to dance! If they are dancing a lot at home and/or asking to take additional classes they are starting to show signs of readiness. Typically a minimum of 2 years dance training is expected but some exceptions may apply.   We will assess the students in their classes and or ask them to come to an assessment class, in which we can determine the appropriate program for them.
